This documentary film is a musical statement of society seen through the eyes of those that make Hip Hop the art form it is today. By following both established stars and up-and-coming new artists from around the globe, speaking out on complex social and political environments, the film sheds light on the rebellious and controversial language of Hip Hop through its music, dance, and compelling graffiti. This journey shows Hip Hop as a bridge of cultural differences and an activist for social change.

Hit Me With Music – Dancehall Documentary

Jamaica continues to be on top of the world-wide music scene, as Reggae has evolved into a new genre, Dancehall. Anywhere, at any time, tunes created by artists from the ghetto tell the story of a society whose reality is marked by violence and poverty.

This documentary introduces us to Yellowman, an albino who was abandoned at birth, but whose passion, sense of humor and talent converted him into the Reggae artist that sold most records, second to Bob Marley. After being diagnosed with cancer in 1985 Yellowman still tours and records 25 years later, with more than 40 records released.

This film is screening as part of the Visionare Cinema Experience

Tape Club Party presented by Red Gallery

Following the ethos of the Norman Jay documentary, club night Tape will keep the audience entertained until the early hours, making sure Good Times will be had by those who decide make the most out of the Bank Holiday and East End Film festival celebrations.

From 11pm  Ziggy Kinder (Ware Records / Souvenir Music) , Robin Drimalski (Watergate) , Never Trust DJs (Ifidota Music / Tape / No-Attitude / Apparel Music) , Charlotte Michelle 11th (Ifidota Music / Tape) Hubble (Sleep is Commercial) , Scott Dickie (Wildkats) , Corey Baker (Wildkats) , Tony Loi   (PureA visuals  ). TAPE ROYAL brings back together the Ifidota Music family. As all members of this young London based record label are busy in their studios – you don’t get to see their infamous Tape or Family Affair parties as often as before, but you know that if they come up with something it’s always a guaranteed special night in the making.  This time the line-up includes Germany based DJs and producers Ziggy Kinder, Hubble, and Watergate Berlin resident Robin Drimalski.

Ifidota Muisc is represented by the usual suspects – Never Trust DJ’s, Charlotte Michelle 11th, Scott Dickie, plus their special friends Corey Baker and Tony Loi. 
Ziggy Kinder’s cosmos of “Minimal Clicks and Cuts” and always play to their strength with hot rolling funk. At the moment he’s busy working on a new album.  Robin Watergate, resident and label manager, doesn’t think of genres as there are too many good tracks from all kinds of music out there – “I play everything that I like or what will be the most fun for the audience and me.”  Hubble (Sleep is Commercial) – Berlin based Giuseppe Marchegiano – has been at the forefront of the Sardinian club-scene for more than 10 years. His work has spanned genres from Acid to House and Electronic in the 90′s, to Techno and Dub Psychedelica. With guest appearances at Klub der Visionäre, Watergate, Arena, Bar25.

 Scott Dickie (Wildkats): One half of Sandeman & Mr Dickie and one third of Wildkats. Corey Baker (Wildkats) – Transplanted from NYC to London, Corey is currently working on original material. Never Trust DJ’s (Ifidota Music / Tape / No-Attitude / Apparel Music) – The two italian born Antonio Colantuoni and Enzo Tedeschi were drawn to London to explore the local underground music scene and further widen their experience as DJ’s and producers. Originally signed to Ifidota Music and recently to No-Attitude Recording, and with an imminent release on a maxi EP for Apparel Music their deep/tech house project looks set to go from strength to strength!  

Charlotte Michelle 11th (Ifidota Music / Tape): Born in the beautiful city of Bratislava she moved to London a few years ago and quickly managed to establish herself as a much loved face on the local DJ circuit. Among her residencies are Ministry of Sound, East London Tape and Family Affair – where she’s been playing alongside Claude Von Stroke, Tiefschwarz, Steve Lawler, Ziggy Kinder, Dan Curtin, Rob Mello and JB.  

Tony Loi (Excuse The Mess / Tape): Born and bred in London, Tony Loi has a distinctive style of Deep Tech Underground House. He has recently been touring with Christian Burkhardt in South Africa and is definitely one to watch on the underground circuit.   PureA VJ’s – Analog animations performed by ‘Purea’ artist Martin Fischer. They define their work as “video jazz” – or in other words – pure analog visual projections edited in real time with no presence of computers.  Tape Royal is the official London showcase for the ‘Electronic Dance Holidays‘ festival. The Festival takes place in Sardinia from 23rd-26th June 2011.

Good Times – The Film

GOOD TIMES is the story of Sound System culture. Against the backdrop of the late seventies and through to the late eighties Notting Hill, we follow the journey of one man. A driving ambition to spread black music to a country divided by political and social unrest drove Norman Jay to battle against not only the system but also his own community. Following Norman around New York and London we discover the times he lived in and the people he encountered on his way, each one with their own agenda. His unorthodox methods and succeed at any cost attitude coupled with an obvious deep passion for the best black music make Norman a complicated man.

Shot over two years, director Terry Walshe follows superstar DJ (and devout Westsider) Norman Jay across New York and London – from the Brooklyn street parties of his youth and New York’s Paradise Garage to Fulham (the site of one of his biggest warehouse parties) and Notting Hill for a series of anecdotal recollections, which deliver a politically poignant yet entertaining insight into a generation that has influenced contemporary Britain and the international dance scene.

With fantastic footage from Carnival through the years, the parties plus contributions from Trevor Nelson, Terry Farley, Jazzie B, Judge Jules & Joey Jay, ‘Good Times – The Film‘ reconfirms how London’s Sound System culture spawned the warehouse parties and acid house movements and eventually created the cult of the DJ as we now know it. This is a must for anyone who gives a damn about real music, real West London, Carnival and most of all about the good times all three collectively represent. So, if you only do one thing, live this, love this, watch this! Rewind!

East London’s Disco crew Lasermagnetic celebrate 6 years of parties showcasing the night life culture of the late 70s & 80s, with two of the hottest Chicago & Los Angeles DJ’s, Rahaan & Zernell. Both were protegees of Ron Hardy, who is credited for the rise of House music through his residency in Chicago’s legendary Music Box club. The Hang The DJ Collective from Leeds host the other room. Plus an exhibition by British artist Victoria Topping, a video installation and projections by PureA VJ’s – Analog animations performed by ‘PureA’ artist Martin Fischer. They define their work as “video jazz” – or in other words, pure analog visual projections edited in real time with no presence of computers.

A documentary about Clayton Patterson who, since 1979, has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City’s Lower East Side. His photo collection includes approximately half a million prints, hundreds of thousands of digital photos, thousands of hours of video tape. As well as the various ephemera of New York City’s streets, such as heroin bags, protest banners, fliers, graffiti stickers and art, he has also documented the NYC hardcore scene of Bad Brains, Sick of it All and G.G. Allin, as well as artists and filmmakers such as Richard Kern, Nick Zedd, Joe Coleman and Annie Sprinkle, all comprising an extensive historical document of the city. A.R.E. Weapons created the film’s score.

Dirty Old Town

The Bowery becomes a nexus of shattered dreams when a merchant has 72 hours to pay his rent. Facing extinction, his ramshackle tent of antiquities lures a troop of misfits, freaks and renegades who form a tableaux full of carnival pageantry, white lies and victimless crime in a fleeting glimpse of Downtown New York. The cast includes fixtures on the New York City nightlife scene such as Nicky D, Paul Sevigny, restauranter and Club Guru, Ashley Graham, and featuring music by Lorraine Leckie and Chelsea Crowell.

Victoria Topping

Illustrator and visual artist currently based in London and Berlin. Her work often focuses on musical themes, an interest that goes back to a childhood fascination with the jazz records in her grandfather’s
collection and which dovetails with another of her artistic interests: DJing, specifically the sounds of late seventies and early eighties funk and disco.

Victoria produces artwork predominantly on a computer, using Adobe Illustrator as well as Photoshop and Flash, but she likes to combine these with elements of more traditional media and regularly splices her digital artwork with freehand drawing and painting. Vicotria Topping has recently held solo exhibitions at CAMP in London and Donuts in Bristol, which were her first since graduating with a First Class Hons degree in Illustration from UWE in 2008.
